The entire world has their opinion ready about the current refugee situation in our world. Everybody is entitled to have their own opinion, I know, but it is very difficult for me to see eye-to-eye with the mindset of some people, some of my friends included.
My parents, aunts and uncles have always taught me to be kind and to do everything to help others who are less fortunate then us. They have (literally) come a long way to be able to have the life that they are having now. This was only possible because of the help and kindness that they have received from others.
I do not understand why the world is so divided about the matter at the moment. To me, it is not more than logical that we should do what we can to help others. If you cannot help physically or material wise, you can at least show compassion and sympathy.
It truly makes me mad to read the outburst if some people on social media. Yes, there are bad people in the world with wrong intentions, but do we honestly think that the millions of people who are leaving everything behind all do this because they want to? They have built a life, a future for themselves and lost everything in a split second.
My uncle has taught me to empathize with others. Try to put yourself in the shoes of the other and imagine how you would feel if you were treated like the way we are treating each other. I am embarrassed of how some people in my own community think and act.
This last week, I have met a couple from Syria who have shared their story with my students. I was touched and moved by what they have been through. These honest and sweet people deserve all the luck and fortune in the world.

Fortunately, there are still a lot of good and kind people around as well. I truly hope that all the good will balance all the negativity out. My family got to receive the help and kindness of others that has resulted in the good life that I am blessed to have now. I sincerely hope that in a few decades, the next generation will be able to have the chance to be as grateful as I am.
As for me, I will do my best to do what I was taught: treat others like I would like to be treated myself. Be kind and help others as much as I can. It is the human thing to do.
Lots of love,
