Last Wednesday was another election day in the Netherlands. This time you had to choose the members of your province. Many Dutch people don’t find this election to be of much importance, but that doesn’t mean that you should let your vote go to waste.
I’ve had several discussions on Wednesday with people who weren’t going to vote. There were a number of reasons why they decided not to vote: too tired, too busy, don’t know whom to vote for, don’t care etc. I think that all these reasons are ridiculous! These are the moments when is proven that people take it for granted that we -us Dutch people- live in a democracy where we’re able to do whatever we want. Our ancestors have paved the way so that we can live like this today. Who are we to give up this right by letting your voice going to waste?
Now, more than ever, we should realise how fortunate we are to live in freedom. Look at what is going on in the Middle East. I don’t need to tell you what horrible things are currently taking place in Libya (just turn on the TV or read the news). People are giving up their lives for the life that we’re living. They are protesting so that they CAN vote. We already have this ability so don’t let your voice go to waste.
Think about this when the next election is coming up!
